If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen that Recently I had my fringe cut back in. It’s not the first time I’ve had a full fringe and it occurred to me that being an ex-hairdresser it may come more naturally to me to look after my fringe than for some people. Fringes can be a big responsibility! Not to mention a hassle when you don’t know how to style them or look after them properly.
My first tip for looking after a fringe is to keep it clean. Try not to touch it throughout the day as you’re only going to make it greasy. I like to carry around a mini dry shampoo for such occasions and generally wash mine every day, even if the rest of my hair doesn’t need washing.
Get the right length and style for you. It’s no good committing to a full fringe when you know you won’t get out of bed int the morning in time to style it, invest in a style to suit your lifestyle and one that will work with your face shape. This is important when considering what type of fringe to get. For example long faces will look great with a full fringe as it adds depth and shortens the face, whereas round faces look great with softer feathery styles, like a side fringe, as they add texture and have a slimming effect on the face.
Use a mattifying foundation or primer. Yes it may sound like an odd one and I probably wouldn't recommend this if you have dry or mature skin, but this helps wonders to keep the oil at bay throughout the day. Having a fringe resting on your forehead can cause the skin to produce more oil, so using mattifying products will help combat this and keep things fresh throughout the day.
Invest in a round brush and a good comb. These are the base tools to my styling my fringe. I use the comb to dry my fringe flat and the round brush to add volume where needed.
And lastly, don't be put off getting a fringe, after all hair grows, just remember like any hairstyle they take time and commitment but when you put the effort in they can look great!
